Martin Luther King had a big dream and he continually reminded himself and the world of that dream to bring its success. He said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

Martin Luther King is well known for this quotation. He had other quotations that guided his life and the lives of millions, quotations such as, "I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" and "Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality."

Do You Dream of a Safer Society?

I'm an inspirational college speaker on safety, crime prevention and identification. I have my own dreams, some as large as those of Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have a dream that everyone will have the skill to look at the face of another and see every nuance that sets it apart from every other face and that this new skill will honor the distinctness of every individual. This will foster the feeling that someone seen twice is practically family.

I have a dream that every felony a criminal ever did will be exposed in the light and that every victim's family will receive total healing and restitution. For what will come from a society when a criminal is relieved of the responsibility of his crime?

I have a dream that every person in America will again walk every street in the day and at night, no matter what his or her color, without fear of harm. I have a dream that every individual will be taught how to access his or her own intuition and by its guiding light, be safe and sound, no matter what situation arises.

We Are Blind to Seeing Faces

Face recognition scientists admit that we do not see faces any better than a 5th grader. However, when individuals are taught specialized identification training, their eyes are opened to a whole new world. Facial characteristics come alive. The process is similar to older days gone by when scientists first peered into a microscope and saw for the first time living micro-organisms. From that wonderful invention came the whole science of microbiology, the pharmaceutical industry, the science of how antimicrobial herbs work and the science of pathology.

Once our eyes are opened to the characteristics on faces around us, a whole new realm of possibilities unfolds: speedy recognition of friends who lost or gained weight or who have not been seen for years, and happy reunions of friends at Halloween as their friends recognize them through their disguises. The beauty of faces is revealed. That is not all, though.

Business friendships are much more easily entered into because faces (and names) are remembered, business profits increase as a result of improved relationships, and a feeling of family togetherness starts to sweep the land. These are just the social, and friendly, sides of improved identification skills.

Ripple Effects on the Crime Rate

There would be a widespread ripple effect on crime and criminals as the public instantly identifies faces of criminals and witness testimonies are given in such detail at court trials that every juror can accurately imagine the face of the criminal. There would be less cases of mistaken identity where innocent people are accused of crimes they did not commit. The criminal element would get the message that they WILL BE IDENTIFIED, no matter what they do. When humans know they can be caught red-handed, they will not commit the crime.

Identification skills are part of the big answer to crime. There is no doubt about it.

Humans are at the top of the evolutionary chain. At least that's what most of us like to believe. To believe anything else would jeopardise our claim as planetary rulers and do tremendous damage to many fragile egos. We may have learnt to walk on two legs, use our opposable thumbs, and develop writing systems, but that doesn't make us the pinnacle of existence. The truth is that no matter how advanced we think we are, we look to animals for inspiration when thinking up many new technologies.

Dolphins, like humans, need to be conscious or maintain a certain level of awareness to breathe. Both species also need to rest their brains by entering into an unconscious state. Humans simply go to sleep, but if dolphins switched off completely as we do, they would drown. In the interests of self-preservation, they have evolved the ability to shut down one half of their brain at a time. This ensures that they maintain enough awareness to tend to their physical needs, while getting much needed rest.

Being able to function on half a brain while letting the other half rest would be an invaluable ability in many professions. Military personnel could stay awake and alert in dangerous situations, and doctors would be able handle their demanding shift schedules. This raises the question of capability. Dolphins use the ability to maintain basic functioning. Doctors and members of the military need higher levels of functioning, as they are responsible for other lives. Would you trust a neurosurgeon with half of his or her brain asleep? Nevertheless, efforts are being made to manufacture stimulants that would allow people to mimic dolphins and maintain awareness for over sixty hours.

Pit Vipers can differentiate between the heat given off by possible prey and the heat emanating from its surrounding rocky environment. This ability comes from granules in their nostrils that are sensitive to changes in heat within a perimeter that extends beyond its striking distance. Scientists mimicked this ability and used it in the creation of thermal imaging technology. Thermal imaging is used in detecting volcanic activity, to track the effects and pace of global warming, and by police and the military in locating body heat.

An application with more functionality for general public use is the study of tree frogs to improve the stickiness and re usability of stick tape. The Indian Institute of Technology studied tree frogs, and their toe pads in particular, to determine how they managed to adhere to various surfaces. They discovered that the footpads had tiny channels on them, which enhanced frogs' sticking ability. This breakthrough led to the design of an adhesive layer of elastic tiers with channels for air or water. The upshot was reusable tape with 30 times the stickiness of current adhesive tape.

The influence of animals can be seen everywhere: the construction of birds' wings helped refine wings on aeroplanes. The ability of hummingbirds to hover was instrumental in the design of helicopters. And the construction of buildings is now being adapted along the lines of termite mounds to conserve energy. We may consider ourselves the epitome of evolution, but our continued borrowing from lower life forms lends itself to the conclusion that our pride in our abilities is severely misguided.
